New "safe for humans" Far-UV light could fight the spread of COVID-19
Study confirms that patented Far-UV Sterilray 222nm ultra violet light kills pathogens AND is safe for human eyes

NEW HAMPSHIRE – J. James Rowsey, MD, conducted studies using Far-UV Sterilray™ technology on corneas from an eye bank, as well as clinical studies with 20 patients suffering from eye disease (corneal ulcers). Dr. Rowsey’s studies confirmed that in addition to not harming human eyes or corneas, exposure to Far UV Sterilray lamps™ actually healed eyes by killing existing bacteria and parasites. Other researchers have studied and verified the safety of Far-UV (222nm) on skin, and now these tests confirm this ground breaking germicidal UV light technology is also safe for human eyes. “Far-UV Sterilray™ proved effective in treating human eye disease, without damaging eye tissue in any way.”, said Dr. Rowsey, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida. This is possible because Far-UV Sterilrays’ unique 222nm UV wavelength does not reach any living skin or eye cells, which is not true of traditional disinfecting UV light. This news is a game-changer in the fight against COVID-19 as this new technology provides UV light disinfection in occupied spaces, rather than just in places without people present.

Ultra-violet light and UV products have seen a surge of attention as the world looks for solutions to safely reopen. While germicidal UVC light products (254nm wavelength) have been used for nearly a century for disinfection purposes primarily in the medical industry, standard UV light is known to have several disadvantages in the battle against COVID-19. As noted by the CDC, standard UVC light is known to be unsafe for human exposure – causing cancer and blindness. Most UV lighting products are not regulated. This results in consumers unknowingly purchasing products that either don’t work, or are dangerous to their health.

Having conducted more than 40 independent lab studies, Far-UV Sterilray™ is a “safe for humans” UV germicidal alternative that has proven to destroy coronavirus and many other pathogens. In fact, those test results show that this newer technology kills pathogens even more quickly and effectively than traditionally accepted UVC lamps (254nm) which are harmful to humans.

Far-UV Sterilray™ is safe because it produces a single source wavelength (only 222nm) which does not penetrate beyond the outer most layer of dead human tissue. What this means is that Far-UV Sterilray™ does not harm human DNA as it does not reach it. In contrast, UVC (254nm) emits harmful rays that do penetrate deeper into human skin and eye tissue where its effects can be detrimental to human health and wellbeing.

In addition to being safer, this newer UV light, is also most effective. Even though Far-UV Sterilray™ light cannot penetrate beyond the outer (non-living) layers of human skin or eye tissue, because bacteria and viruses have a much thinner outer layer and smaller dimensions than human tissue, Far-UV Sterilray™ is actually able to enter and explode pathogens. To the contrary, UVC light takes a significantly longer time to merely deactivate (not destroy) viruses by temporarily disrupting their ability to reproduce.

Other advantages of Far-UV Sterilray™ over UVC include the fact that the lamps do not contain harmful mercury and do not emit ozone, as UVC does. Additionally, UVC is known to degrade nearby rubbers and plastics, making it an impractical solution for many disinfection purposes. UVC lamp life is often well under 3,000 hours, whereas Far-UV Sterilray™ lamps have a 30,000-hour warranty – with some hospitals running them 24/7 in HVAC units for the past 5 years without the need for replacement lamps.

Founder and CTO of Far-UV Sterilray™, Ed Neister, discovered this ground breaking wavelength called Far-UV (222nm) which he began writing patents for in 2005. Having developed lasers for U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” initiative, as well as numerous medical device lasers such as the first 510K tattoo removal lasers, Mr. Neister is no stranger to the patent process. Still it took nearly a decade from his first discovering Far-UV, to secure those patents and develop the first commercially available products using Far-UV Sterilray™ patented technology. Mr. Neister’s discovery of Far-UV (222nm) lead to the first and only product to capture just the “safe for humans” single source 222nm wavelength in a UV lamp.

Far-UV Sterilray™ products kill air, surface, and waterborne pathogens, and include HVAC, overhead lamps, and portable units. Due to overwhelming interest in Far-UV Sterilray™ products and technology, the company is currently exploring and seeking manufacturing partnerships within the U.S. to meet the global demand for this lifesaving technology.
